Housing Ministry Holds Pre - retirement Training for Officers Retirement, a redirection of wealth of experience - Belgore The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Shuaib Belgore has described retirement as a redirection of wealth of experience into new and meaningful ventures rather than a withdrawal from productivity. Belgore spoke during the opening ceremony of a two-day Staff Pre-Retirement Training organized for retiring officers of the Ministry, at the Conference Room of the Ministry. The Permanent Secretary was represented by the Director department of Human Resource Management, Ademola Ayodele. He described the event as a significant milestone marking not just the end of a career in public service, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities, growth, and renewed purpose. Welcoming distinguished participants, facilitators, and the retiring officers on behalf of the Honourable Minister, the Permanent Secretary noted that the training programme was specially organized to equip participants with the knowledge, practical skills, and mindset required to transition successfully from active service into retirement. He sincerely acknowledged the years of commitment, professionalism, and invaluable contributions of the retiring officers to the growth and transformation of the Ministry; “Your service has helped shape policies, projects, and programs that continue to impact communities across our nation”, he added. Dr. Belgore urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, ask questions, share experiences, and take full advantage of the resource persons assembled for the programme. “I wish everyone of you a productive and rewarding training session, as well as a fulfilling and prosperous life beyond active service”, He said. In his welcome address, the director department of Human Resource Management, Ayodele Ademola, informed that the program would cover key areas such as financial planning, health and wellness, psychological readiness, and entrepreneurship, among others. He encouraged the participants to actively, ask questions, and share experiences as the platform was designed for their benefit. Mr. Ademola further thanked the participants for their service, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment, expressing gratitude to the facilitators for making themselves available for the training. The training featured interactive sessions where facilitators delivered presentations and provided practical insights on key areas essential for post-service success. In a presentation titled “Perspectives in Retirement,” the first facilitator, Mr. Fashina Kayode, urged participants to identify and develop their innate skills as a foundation for a productive retirement. He emphasised that carefully harnessed skills can enhance financial stability and long-term sustainability. Fashina outlined four pillars of retirement to include; Financial Security, Health and Wellness, Purpose and Engagement, Social Connection. Highlighting common challenges such as financial uncertainty, health concerns, social isolation, and difficulty adjusting to a less structured lifestyle, he noted that adherence to these pillars would enable retirees to enjoy a meaningful and rewarding post-service life. Another facilitator, Mr. Francis Olorunfemi, delivered a lecture titled “Retirement in the public service: The uncertainties, the fears and the need for future plans”, where He focused on the theme of uncertainty, explaining that it is a natural part of retirement and may arise in areas such as business ventures, pension administration, and personal relationships. He stressed the importance of cultivating a positive mindset, noting that resilience and adaptability are crucial to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling retirement. While encouraging participants to establish viable businesses, he advised them to invest only in ventures they understand and can personally supervise, warning that lack of oversight often leads to financial loss. On health and wellness of retirees, a medical facilitator Mr. Adeose P. J, urged participants to adopt routine medical check-ups, maintain physical fitness through daily exercise and stretching, and develop financial plans to address potential health challenges. He further emphasised the importance of mental health in retirement, recommending engagement in hobbies, continuous learning, volunteering, and social activities as essential strategies for maintaining psychological well-being. Also in his contribution, Director of the department of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Peter Osondu, advocated for reforms within the civil service, particularly in strengthening remuneration packages beyond their current levels. Osondu stressed that no amount of training can fully offset financial limitations if post-retirement earnings remain insufficient, underscoring the need for broader structural improvements to enhance retirees’ financial security.

H.E, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, CON the Honorable Minister of Works and Housing has said that the five number internal roads both newly constructed and rehabilitated by the FG within the Federal Medical Center, Owo in Ondo State is part of government's intervention to boost health care delivery in the Health Sector of Nigeria. This, he said will go a long way in saving lives of citizens. The Minister stated this during the official Commissioning and hand over of five numbers (5) internal roads intervention at the Federal Medical Center Owo in Ondo State. The Minister, who was represented by the Ag. Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State, Engr. Olajide Hussein said that with these newly constructed and rehabilitated five internal road network within FMC, Owo, already from reports and testimonials of patients using the facility has been a great boost to timely treatment of patients, the easy and speedy movement of emergency patients within and in between wards and also different clinical sections has been greatly enhanced. Speaking further, Fashola confirmed that the gap of Nigerian's infrastructure needs is steadily being bridged by a gradual process of repairs, renewal and construction of impactful internal roads within varied institutions and Federal Medical Centers. In his words... ''We have successfully intervened in 64 internal Roads projects in various Federal Tertiary institutions and handed over a total of 46 as at March, 2022 and we are now having another 18 ready to be handed over, while we are currently attending to 19 roads in similar institutions across the Country making a total of 83. The entire FMC, Owo community made up of Doctors, Resident Doctors, Nurses, Trainee Nurses, patients and their relatives who use the facility for medical treatment have all expressed renewed enthusiasm and glaring joy with regards to receiving timely and quality attention and treatment to their wards which has both saved lives and funds since these five roads intervention by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing came into effect. The Minister also affirmed that this intervention is consistent with the progressive ideal of President Muhammadu Buhari's Administration's commitment of improving human condition, and that this process continues here as we hand over these five internal newly constructed and rehabilitated roads within the Federal Medical Center Owo as a critical intervention to support this medical institution. Also, during the construction of these five roads, people were employed in the process, thereby contributing to the job creation initiatives of the government and it is hoped that the Management the Federal Medical Center, Owo will now ensure that this asset is used properly and not abused. Earlier, the Chief Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Liasu Adeagbo who was represented by Dr. Aiyeyemi Adeyinka Joseph - Head Clinical Services and Director Training was full of deep appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, CON. He said to this five internal road network intervention has brought a lot of joy to them as Medical Doctors and much more to the patients they treat, this has boosted their moral to provide quality health care services to patients, who in turn because of the beautiful ambiance of the environment believe that they will be healed once they enter the Facility. Dr. Joseph however appealed that this Sectoral collaboration is necessary and should continue - Bad roads he said are a great danger to genuine attempt in saving lives especially in the movement of emergency patients within different clinical sections for immediate treatment - this is due to the vast expanse of land which Owo Federal Medical Center occupies. This he also said is a great boost to the Doctors as well who find it now very easy to access wards and patient for treatment and attention. These roads have also made it easier for Trainee Nurses to move around during training sessions. Also in the same vein, the Ag. Head of Nursing Services, Mrs Mabel Atinuke Asegbeloyin said that the road network intervention has enhanced smooth transportation of both workers, patients and trainee nurses around thereby making their work easy- areas across different wards and patient are now easily accessed. Affirming the huge benefits of these roads also was Dr Opeyemi Samuel Salako, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors in the Center, he said this is a very laudable infrastructural intervention which has brought improvement to the accessibility of the knocks and crannies of the facility, especially in the swift movement of patients from emergency points to wards and theatres for immediate treatment. He honestly appreciated the President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola, while also hoping that more of such intervention to improve health care service delivery in other Medical Centers around Nigeria should be considered. FG Passionate About Training Workers The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Bashir Nura Alkali has stated that the Federal Government is passionate about skill acquisition and professionalism among its workers and as such deemed it necessary to equip and train its officers in the areas of Leadership, Professional Ethics, Code of Conduct in Public Service and Career Prospects and Progression for Professionals to achieve positive and maximum work output. Alkali made the remarks at the opening of a Professional Training for Lands and Estate Officers in the Lands and Housing Development Department of Federal Ministry of Works and Housing which held at the conference hall of the Ministry. The Permanent Secretary noted that there has been low productivity, indiscipline and lack of efficiency among officers and to curb these unproductive attitude officers needed to be trained and re-trained to enhance greater understanding of their responsibilities coupled with the knowledge and skill needed to do work to enhance productivity and maximum output which had necessitated this training programme. He stated that he is pleased with the training, giving the present disposition and lack of commitment among members of staff in the Public Service considering the growing awareness and expectation of service delivery from Public Officers in a growing democracy like ours. “The importance of this training at this time cannot be overemphasized with the growing awareness and expectation of service delivery from Public Officers in a growing democracy like ours. It is important that those vested with the management of most valuable assets be made to increase their efficiency and productivity as well as professionalism to grow the economy.” Alkali encouraged officers to be committed and make the programme a great success so as to gain maximum benefits in their career as Lands Officers to improve efficiency and productivity. We Are Committed To Fighting Corruption In The Ministry- Nura Alkali The Permanent Secretary of Works and Housing, Bashir Nura Alkali has stated that the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing is committed to stemming corrupt practices in the Ministry with the inauguration of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU). The Permanent Secretary represented by the Director of Human Resource in the Ministry, Abdullahi Aliyu stated this during the inauguration and induction of the new Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) members in the Ministry on Wednesday, November 23, 2022. According to Alkali, the Ministry is in full support of all the activities of the ACTU in the Ministry saying, “We respond to requests for information from ICPC promptly and we make sure that we support the activities and programmes of ACTU without delay." Accordingly, he said that the Ministry was also supporting the ACTU in sensitization and awareness creation in order to fight corrupt practices in the Ministry. Explaining that the Ministry has done a lot in support of the ACTU activities, he said: “we have a very active Chairman and Team at the Ministry and I will not be exaggerating if I say the Ministry’s ACTU is one of the most active in Federal Government MDAs. He commended ICPC and assured that the Ministry would not relent in its efforts and drive in fighting corrupt practices in the Ministry in particular and Nigeria in general through established viable platforms like the ACTU. Delivering his goodwill message, the Chairman of ICPC, Professor Bolaji Owasanoye represented by Mrs. Lasis Mutiat stated that ACTUs in MDAs were initiated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation as an in-house check mechanism to assist management of MDAs in corruption prevention and to entrench ethical principles within the organizations. According to the ICPC Chairman the inauguration and induction of the ACTU in the Ministry was undoubtedly a strong testament and commitment of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to supporting and implementing the anti-corruption initiatives of the Federal Government. Listing the functions of the ACTU in the Ministry, he said: “The main duties of ACTU are to undertake periodic sensitization of staff on and against corruption, examine systems, processes and procedures that are prone to corruption and proffer solutions and develop a Code of Ethics/Conduct for staff to ensure compliance with the same. Continuing, he listed other duties including monitoring budget implementation, implementation of the Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard as well as investigating complaints or reports received from the staff of the Ministry. Giving his Vote of Thanks, the Deputy-Director/Chairman of ACTU of the Ministry, Barrister Sunny Iyang thanked God for the opportunity given to them in the committee to serve in the capacity as an agent fighting against corruption in the Ministry, saying that corruption is a deadly disease ravaging the entire nation. He said: “It is worthy to be entrusted with the responsibility to fight corruption in the system. Our appointment is a litmus test for our integrity in the fight against corruption and we will help the Ministry and ICPC to fight this dreaded ill of the society called corruption to an end." The oath of allegiance which was administered to the newly inaugurated members by Barrister Jennifer Ode on behalf of the ICPC Chairman charged them to live above board as the inauguration and induction of today 23rd of November, 2022 signify their journey for the three years’ tenure as members of the Ministry's ACTU.
